Fulton girls claim first 20-win season, district title: Big fourth quarter helps beat Seymour, 42-36 (KNS Article):

All of those long winters of despair for the once-woebegone Fulton High School girls' basketball program finally got pushed way back in the Lady Falcons' rearview mirror Monday night against Seymour in the District 3-AA championship game.
The host Lady Falcons battled past Seymour 42-36 as Fulton claimed its first 20-win season and first district tournament title in school history.
"There have been a lot of people wear the uniform - this has been a long-time coming," Fulton coach John Fisher said with a smile.
Fulton (20-7) outscored Seymour 16-6 in the fourth quarter as it beat the Lady Eagles (19-8) for the third time this season.
Tournament MVP Jasmine Lewis of Fulton scored six of her 11 points in the final 49 seconds as she provided clutch play in the waning moments.
Seymour had pulled within 35-34 on a layup by Tiffany Miles with 1 minute, 10 seconds to play.
Victoria Dailey led Fulton in scoring with 12 points and played a big hand in 15 costly Seymour turnovers.
"Victoria Dailey brought energy all night long, especially on defense," said Fisher.
"Our gameplan going in was to pressure them and it worked."
Seymour coach Andy Rines agreed that his team's inability to handle Fulton's full-court defensive pressure was a huge key.
"We just had too many unforced turnovers," said Rines.
"We haven't done that all year. For whatever reason we couldn't throw it or catch it. If you can't do that you can't win basketball games."
That was particularly true in the second quarter as Fulton - which trailed 16-15 at the 6:20 mark - scored just two points the rest of the half.
The Lady Falcons, who hit just one of 11 field goals and missed all four of their free-throw tries during the last 6:20 of the half, weathered the storm thanks to Seymour floor miscues.
Call it a missed opportunity for Seymour as the Lady Eagles led just 21-18 at the half.
"Offensively, we just shot ourselves in the foot again and again," said Rines.
Morgan Rogers contributed seven points and five rebounds for Fulton. Bre Hall netted six points and was a defensive terror. Mariah Goss chipped in four points and six rebounds.
For Seymour, freshman post Christina Slay pulled down 14 rebounds and scored nine points. Ashleigh Elliott hit three 3-pointers for nine points while Monica Rogers scored eight.
Both teams advance to first-round Region 2 games Friday night.
Fulton plays host to Christian Academy of Knoxville at 7 o'clock while Seymour entertains Stone Memorial.
Stone Memorial edged CAK 59-53 Monday night in the District 4-AA consolation game.
"We get a home game in the first round of the region and the regional tournament is a whole new game," said Rines.
For Fulton, Fisher said the trick is to be focused heading into regional play after breaking new ground for the program.
The Lady Falcons have never won more than one game in regional play.
"We're going to enjoy this tonight and go back to work Tuesday," Fisher said.
"We've got other goals out there."

Six Falcons Honored as All-District 3-AA: Fisher Coach of the Year, Lewis Player of the Year

Six Fulton Falcon basketball players from both the boys and girls teams have been nominated as All-District 3-AA for their outstanding efforts throughout this season. In addition to the six players receiving All-Star honors, Girl's Basketball coach John Fisher was selected as the District 3-AA Coach of the Year. Jasmine Lewis was also selected as the Girl's District Player of the Year.

Two Falcon Legends Named to Vols All-Century Team

Former Fulton Falcons Ron Widby and Bill Justus have been named as a members of the Tennessee Volunteer basketball All-Century team. George Ronald "Ron" Widby, who graduated from Fulton High in 1963, lettered in Football, Basketball, Baseball and Golf for the Falcons and Vols, and was named a college All-America in football and basketball. Widby is also a member of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. Widby is considered by many to be one of Tennessee’s most gifted athletes of all time. Widby was Tennessee’s last Vol to letter in four different varsity sports. Widby led the Vols to basketball SEC championship in 1967. On the night of Widby’s final home basketball game, he scored 50 points against LSU, a school record that stood for twenty years until it was finally broken by Tony White. After leaving Tennessee Widby went on to play for in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers. Ron played in Super Bowl V and Won a Super Bowl Ring in Super Bowl VI. Ron was also chosen to the Pro Bowl in 1971. Widby kicked an 84 yard punt which is still a Dallas Cowboy record today. Not only was Ron a professional football star but he also played ABA basketball for the New Orleans Buccaneers and later Widby even made the Senior tour as a professional golfer.

Bill Justus was a High School All-American in football and basketball at Fulton High School in Knoxville, attended the University of Tennessee and became a basketball standout. He was named All-SEC (in 1967, '68 and '69), an NCAA Academic All-American in '68 and an NCAA All-American in 1969. Justus continues to hold three NIT free throw records as well as three single game NCAA Madison Square Garden free throw records. He played in the East-West College All-Star Game in 1969 before being drafted by Philadelphia (NBA), Denver (ABA) and the Dallas Cowboys (NFL). Justus traveled extensively after college teaching ball-handling and shooting skills for Converse at coaches' clinics and basketball camps throughout the U.S. Since taking up competitive tennis after age 30, he has won numerous amateur USTA tournament championships. Justus, who lives in Nashville, was inducted into the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.

Fulton's Lewis hits a winner (KNS Article)

Guard Jasmine Lewis upped her intensity down the stretch - just in time for Fulton High School.

The senior led the Lady Falcons to a comeback 45-43 victory against Seymour (15-5) to claim first place outright in District 3-AA on Friday.

Lewis hit a jumper with four seconds left to break a 43-43 tie for Fulton (16-6).

Seymour had time for one more shot, but guard Ashleigh Elliot's attempt was blocked as time expired.

The Lady Eagles had the lead the entire game until the final possession.

Lewis finished with 20 points, including 18 in the second half, and her team's final 13 points in the third quarter.

Fulton coach John Fisher said the plan was to go to Lewis.

"She is a really tough player, we wanted to give her the ball and she came through," Fisher said.

Up five with 3:30 left, Seymour tried to play keep-away to run the clock out. After a possession lasting over a minute, the Lady Eagles' Tiffany Miles was called for an offensive foul.

With the ball back, Lewis went to the basket immediately, scored and drew a foul.

Seymour had several costly mistakes down the stretch. A turnover with 50 seconds left allowed Fulton to tie the game at 43. On the ensuing possession Seymour was fouled but missed both free throws setting up Fulton's game-winning shot.

Lady Eagles Fall in Last Four Seconds (Seymour Herald)

The Lady Eagles led most of the game, and if they could have held on four seconds longer, would still be in contention for first place. Instead, the Falcons stole the lead in the final seconds at 45-43 and the Lady Eagles never got a chance to get it back, making Fulton the district champions.

Seymour had a substantial lead at the half, winning 23-14. With only 1:33 to go in the game, they were still winning by 6 points, but turnovers and fouls would plague the Lady Eagles in the final 90 seconds, as they had for most of the fourth quarter.

The Falcons tied it up off of two foul shots with 43 seconds left in the game. They were excellent from the line in the fourth quarter, hitting nine out of 10 free throws. Conversely, Seymour only hit two of seven in the fourth quarter.

Fulton pulled ahead with four seconds to go, and despite their best efforts, Seymour could not get a shot off before the buzzer.

"Bottom line is this, Fulton hit their free throws and we did not. We would have won the game if we hit free throws in the fourth quarter," said Coach Andy Rines.

"We're not going to go as far as this team has potential to go if we do not do a better job of knocking down free throws," Rines continued. "It's got to get better or we're in trouble."

However, despite being disappointed with his team's free throw shooting, he thought they played hard. "I thought our effort was great. I can't fault our effort. We played very hard. Fulton is an outstanding team and Jasmin Lewis is a great high school player- very difficult to defend."

Three Football Falcons Sign Letters of Intent

Today, three Fulton Falcon Football players from the Class of 2009 signed college Letters of Intent. All signed with colleges in the state of Tennessee. Here are the details:

Vincent Johnson (6-7, 290 lbs) Off/Def Lineman- signed with the Austin Peay State Governors (Clarksville, TN) of the Ohio Valley Conference. APSU is coached by Rich Christophel.

Courtland Styles (6-3, 203 lbs) WR/Safety- signed with the Cumberland University Bulldogs (Lebanon, TN) of the Mid-South Conference (NAIA). CU is coached by Dewayne Alexander.

Matthew Blasco (6-1, 291 lbs) Offensive Lineman- signed with the Maryville College Scots (Maryville, TN) of the USA South Atlantic Conference (NCAA Div III). MC is coached by Tony Ierulli.

1. Antonio Richardson (6'6 320)-DT Ensworth- Massive defensive tackle sat out this past season after a transfer from Mt. Pleasant. Expect an immediate impact next season as he will be one of the more dominant linemen in the South.

2. Jabriel Washington (6'1 170)-ATH Jackson Trinity Christian-All State selection is a threat on the ground and in the air. He also shows big league prowess as a defensive back. SEC and Big 12 schools are all over this kid. Had over 1,000 passing over 700 rushing and 80+ tackles.

3. Terry Redden (6'1 280) -DT Memphis Whitehaven- All Region selection stood out on a team loaded with D-1 talent. Has been a standout on the camp circuit and is the next star at Whitehaven. Wants to be the best.

4. Aaron Bryant (5'11 190)-LB Nashville Hillsboro. Star of the state championship game against Maryville. Look for him to become the star next year for Hillsboro with the departure of Eric Gordon.

5. Devrin Young ( 5'7 160)-RB/CB Knoxville Bearden- All State selection and Prep Extra Sophomore of the year, Young exploded onto the scene this season with a breakout 1st season on the varsity level. SEC and Pac-10 schools have shown interest. Amassed over 2,000 all purpose yards and 21 TD’s.

6. Christian Coleman (6'4 250)-TE Milan-All State selection excels on both sides of the ball. Early interest from Pac-10 and Big 10 schools. Showed big time athletic ability in the state championship game against Alcoa.

7. Tanner Owen (6'6 270)-OL Cheatham County-Helped pace his team to average 170 yards per game on the ground. Has excellent size, good feet.

8. Artaves Gibson (6'2 220)-RB Memphis Mitchell- All State selection rushed for over 1,700 yards this past season for the Tigers. Physically back, who can still take it the distance from anywhere on the field.

9. Chris Sensabaugh (5'11 190)-RB/LB Kingsport DB- Burst onto the scene as a frosh and continued to impress as a sophomore with over 1,100 yards rushing. Future at the next level may be at linebacker. Named 2nd team All Region.

10. Jake Overby (6'0 175)-QB USJ- All State Selection passed for over 3,000 and 29 TD’s. Led the state of Tennessee in passing yards.

11. Jeremiah Bryson (5'8 170)-RB/DB Smyrna- Showed he is a premier player in the state as a freshman rushing for over 1,000 yards. Teams keyed on him all season as a sophomore but he still rushed for over 800yards, but suffered from several nagging injuries. Future may be at DB on the next level.

12. Tyler Rice (6'4 185)-QB Wayne County- All State selection is also a big time basketball prospect. Has great bloodlines, size and passed for over 1,400 yards this past season. Has all the moxie you look for in a signal caller.

13. Deon Meadows (6'0 200)-FB/LB Smyrna- Registered over 120+ tackles on the season from his linebacker position. Has great instincts and makes plays all over the field.

14. Taharin Tyson-FB/LB Alcoa- All State selection was part of a running back by committee for state champion Alcoa. Has a powerful low center of gravity and runs behind his pads well. Could play fullback or linebacker in college.

15. Victor Caro (5'7 160)-RB Brentwood Academy- Sophomore standout rushed for over 1,200 yards. The star of a great nucleus of sophomores for the Eagles.

16. Eric McCollough (5'1 185)-FB/LB Chatt Howard- Registered over 70 tackles and rushed for over 500 yards on the season. A headhunter who likes to make the big hit.

17. Justin Williams (5'9 180)-RB Davidson County- All State selection and Mr. Football finalist lead the nation in rushing off and on this season as he rushed for over 2,800 yards and 39 TD’s. Led team to a state title. Has great vision and cutback ability.

18. Demetrius Thomas (5'10 180)-RB Knoxville Fulton- Powerful and fluid back did not start until the 3rd game of the season. Rushed for over 700 yards for a very young Fulton team. Style is reminiscent of former Tennessee Vol Reggie Cobb. Comes from a very athletic family.

19. Tavaris Shegog (5'7 220)-LB Memphis Washington- Had 15 sacks and 50+ tackles from his linebacker position

20. Jarrod Coleman (6'2 190)-QB McCallie- Played as a backup as a freshman and again this season behind a junior QB, however all the intangibles are there. McCallie implements a Tim Tebow type package when he enters the game. May not start again next season, but will play a lot.

Falcon's Boys Basketball Team to Play in Landair Hoops Classic in Greenville

Landair Hoops Classic Set Thanksgiving Week At Hal Henard Gym

The annual Landair Transport Inc. Tip-Off Basketball Classic is scheduled for Hal Henard Gym in Greeneville the week of Thanksgiving, with some of the best boys' basketball teams in the state scheduled to appear.

A total of 16 teams will be in town for the tourney, including two teams from Canada and one from Virginia.

The event will begin on Monday, Nov. 24, and will continue through Saturday, Nov. 29. No games will be played on Thanksgiving Day, which is Thursday, Nov. 27.

Action starts on Monday, Nov. 24, at 4 p.m. when the Johnson County Longhorns take on the Morristown East Hurricanes, followed at 5:30 p.m. by the defending Class AA state champion Fulton Falcons of Knoxville going against Jefferson County. The 7 p.m. game finds the Dragons of Clinton going against Cocke County, with the 8:30 p.m. finale pitting the host Greeneville Greene Devils against CDL of Canada.

Four more first round games are set for Tuesday, Nov. 25. At 4 p.m. Sevier County goes against Ecole Seondare of Canada, while the 5:30 p.m. game has Sullivan South's Rebels taking on Meigs County. The 7 p.m. contest pits the Volunteer Falcons against Chattanooga East Ridge, and the 8:30 p.m. game has another Chattanooga school, Red Bank, meeting Roanoke Catholic of Virginia.

Loser's bracket games begin Wednesday afternoon, with the four quarterfinal games set for Wednesday night. More loser's bracket games and the tourney semifinals are Friday. Action continues Saturday leading up to the championship game at 8:30 p.m.

"We're looking forward to another great tournament," Greeneville Coach Billy Duncan said. "We've got some of the best teams in the state coming in here and I think the local fans will enjoy watching the tourney."

Basketball Falcons Tip off Season in St Mary's Classic at Thompson-Boling

The Fulton Falcon's boys and girls basketball teams tipped off the regular season in the St. Mary's Health System High School Tip-Off Classic Thursday night at Thompson-Boling Arena.

The Fulton boys team posted a 18-6 win over the West High Rebels in only a quarter of action. Robert Boyd led the Falcons with 10 points.

The Fulton girls team was edged by the Lady West Rebels 17-14. The Lady Falcons were led by Victoria Dailey's 9 points.

While Fulton won 18-6 over West in the St. Mary's Health System High School Tip-Off Classic, the Falcons are a work in progress.
"We got nine new players," said Wright. "Really of our 12 guys, (James) Gallman, (Jalen) Steele and Robert Boyd are the only ones who've logged significant minutes. It's a learning process, that these guys have to understand their roles and what their strengths are.
"It's an everyday thing in practice. We look good for a couple of minutes and then we look like a middle school team for a while."
Not many middle school teams have a Division I signee (Gallman) and a Division I recruit (Steele). Each buried a 3-pointer behind the new collegiate 3-point line en route to a Fulton 12-4 first-quarter lead.
"It (the 3) felt good," said Steele, a junior. "It's very bright (in the arena). There's a lot of orange. But it gets you pumped up."
Steele, the PrepXtra sophomore of the year last season, has been eyed as a possible recruit for the Vols. Gallman, a 5-foot-11 guard/wing, inked with Midde Tennessee State last week.
Each increased his offseason training in preparation for the college ranks - and to set a work-ethic example for the newcomers.
Gallman put on 10 pounds. Wright called it "good weight" and not the "weight around the middle."
"We're trying to repeat," said Gallman. "Of course, we have to work hard. We're the captains of the team. We have to teach these younger kids how to play."
Robert Boyd scored a game-high nine points, seven of which ignited an 11-0 run to put the exhibition to rest. Fulton's season officially starts next week at the Greeneville Land-Air Classic.
"I've never gone in (a season) as a defending state champion," said Wright. "I know that in the past we tend to get most people's best effort because of the success we've had. I think that will hold true this year as well."

West 17, Fulton 14:

West prevailed in a game that featured Southeast Missouri signees Erika Lane and Jasmine Lewis guarding each other. Lane' consecutive baskets to start the second quarter staked the Lady Rebels to an 11-6 lead. Vanessa Moore added all 4 of her points in the final 32 seconds. Alexus Patterson added 5 points.

Victoria Dailey scored Fulton's first 9 points and Morgan Rogers added three foul shots.

Fulton Travels to Livingston Academy for Season Finale

Fulton and Livingston Academy will conclude their 2008 seasons friday at Livingston…The Falcons will miss the playoffs for the first time since 1993….Fulton is on a 3-game losing streak, and has averaged scoring only 8 points a game during the stretch…Fulton’s last losing season came in 1996 when the Falcons finished 4-7…Fulton has won all 3 prior meetings with the Wildcats, and holds a record of 12-5 against schools hailing from the mid-state…FHS has been a 2nd half team in 2008. Series History

Friday marks the fourth-ever meeting between Fulton and Livingston Academy. These two teams have combined to win 4 of the last 5 Class 3A state championships, with Fulton winning in 2003-2004, 2006, and Livingston Academy earning the title in 2005. The Falcons hold a 3-0 advantage in the all-time series. Fulton won the first meeting in 2005 at Fulton 18-7, and won in the mud at Livingston 54-0 two years ago. Fulton shut out the Wildcats 36-0 last year in Knoxville. The schools have met twice on the hardwood, with the Wildcats defeating Fulton in the first round of the 1997 TSSAA boy’s state basketball tournament, and Fulton winning in the first round of the 2008 tourney. This is the 18th time that the Falcons have faced a team hailing from the mid-state. Fulton has a record of 12-5 against teams from middle Tennessee. This will be only the fourth regular season meeting between Fulton and a mid-state school since 1959.

Last Meeting

Fulton concluded its 2007 regular season with a 36-0 victory over Livingston Academy on Senior Night at Bob Black Field. The Falcons overcame an over 25 minute deficit in time of possession, and only ran 25 total plays on offense. The FHS defense converted two Livingston Academy turnovers into scores in the first half.
The Falcons opened the scoring in the game when Derek Wilcox intercepted a Brannon McCoin pass and returned it for a 38-yard touchdown. Terrence Cobb added the second touchdown of the game on a 26-yard jaunt late in the first quarter.
Fulton increased the lead to 22-0 following the first of Ken Tyson’s 2 TDs. Tyson recorded a 4-yard scoring run on a wide receiver sweep. The defense struck again late in the 2nd quarter when Jabriel Siler stepped in front of a McCoin pass and returned it 38-yards to give Fulton a 30-0 lead at the half.
Despite only completing 2 of 6 passes for 16 yards FHS QB Jonathan Blair closed out the scoring with a 12-yard strike to Tyson mid-way through the 3rd period. The mercy rule went into effect and the Fulton defense recorded their 3rd shutout of 2007, and the 80th in school history. Linebacker Stefon Matthews led the defense with 9 tackles and 2 sacks.

The Wildcats got off the snide last week with a big win against Stone Memorial 28-0. Livingston Academy now has a chance to finish the season strong against a depleted Fulton Falcons team on "Senior Night" on Halloween.

"The kids worked really hard," coach Bruce Lamb said. "They busted their tails during the game to get a win.

"Offensively we came out and ran the ball very well and everything seemed to click."

The offense produced the most points they have scored in a game this season and managed the clock by running the ball. Breaks also seemed to go Livingston's way as well, as they recovered the opening kickoff to set up a touchdown run.

"In the last two weeks we didn't have any breaks go our way," Lamb said. "It seemed like it was the first time in nine games we had a break go our way."

Coach Lamb said the Wildcats will have to limit big plays and manage the clock to keep the athletic Falcons off the field. Though both teams have been down this season and are already out of the playoffs, a win puts a better taste in their mouths going into winter workouts.

"If we can win two in a row it will be big momentum going into next season," Lamb said.

Fulton and Austin East Rivalry Continues Friday Night at Bob Black Field

The Falcons meet their oldest current rival Friday at Bob Black Field. Fulton and Austin-East will meet for the 41st time in a rivalry that dates back to 1969. The Roadrunners lead the all-time series 23-17, but Fulton has won the last 3 meetings and 6 out of the last 9 games…Fulton’s playoff hopes took a severe hit last week after a 28-3 loss to Catholic. Last Meeting

The Fulton Falcons completed the season sweep of the Austin-East Roadrunners with a 26-6 victory at Bob Black Field in the 3rd rond of the TSSAA playoffs. The FHS defense turned in another masterful effort, intercepting 5 passes and holding the Roadrunners to 96 total yards.
Derek Humphrey had a career night for Fulton, intercepting 3 A-E passes, and catching 3 passes for 43 yards and a score. Humphrey opened the scoring for the home team by stepping in front of a Mark Montgomery pass and returning it 60 yards for a TD early in the 1st quarter. Humphrey then scored on the offensive end as he hauled in an 8-yard strike from Jonathan Blair to give Fulton a 14-0 lead.
The Falcons gave up their first points of the post season early in the 2nd half when Trey Smith intercepted a deflected Blair pass and returned it 66-yards for A-E’s only score. Fulton quickly regained the momentum on the next possession as Vic Smith got behind the Roadrunner secondary and caught a 61-yard scoring bomb from Blair. Terrence Cobb closed out the scoring for Fulton with a 49-yard run mid-way through the 3rd quarter. Cobb posted another strong effort versus A-E, rushing 22 times for 157 yards.
The Falcon defense sacked A-E quarterbacks 4 times in the game, and limited the Roadrunners to converting only 1 of 12 third and fourth down conversions. Penalties were again a concern for Fulton. The Falcons were penalized 14 times for 128 yards.

The two seniors from Austin-East returned to football this season after playing as freshmen and have instantly become sought-after recruits. They're also nightmarish matchups for opponents. The Falcons recorded season lows in rushing yards (14) and total offense yards (128) last week…With a 2-2 record in region play, the Falcons are fighting to keep a 15-year playoff streak alive…The last time Fulton started a season 3-4 was in 1998. Friday’s game between Fulton and Catholic could mark the final meeting between the schools. Catholic is scheduled to move up in classification next year. Despite only having 5 previous meetings, the Fulton-Catholic match-up has become one of East Tennessee’s premier high school games. In four of the previous meetings, one of the teams was ranked #1 in the state of Tennessee. Last year, the #1-ranked Irish steamrolled Fulton 27-0 at Catholic. The Falcons and Irish met twice in 2005 and 2006, with each team winning two games. Fulton won the first-ever meeting in 2005 over the #1 ranked Irish 38-9. Catholic won the playoff rematch 21-0 in the second round, thanks in part to an amazing touchdown catch by Harrison Smith. Catholic defeated the 1st ranked Falcons on Bob Black Field 27-14 in 2006. Fulton answered by knocking off the top ranked Irish later in the year. 18-13. The Falcons overcame a 13-0 deficit in the 4th quarter with 3 late touchdowns. Dennis Freeney’s diving catch gave Fulton the deciding points.Despite the fact that for many years Futon and Catholic were located near to each other, the schools do share a few similarities. From 1951-1964 Fulton played its home games on Evans-Collins Field, the same field that Catholic played on when the school was located on Magnolia. In 1983 Catholic hosted the Shamrock Bowl, a post-season doubleheader. The Falcons won their Shamrock Bowl game over Carter by the score of 10-7.

Fulton could not overcome a turnover plagued 2nd quarter that saw Catholic score 3 touchdowns, as the Irish defeated Fulton 27-0. The loss marked the first time since 2001 that the Falcons were shutout. Irish wingback Matt Pfleger scored all three 2nd quarter TDs.
The Falcons suffered a tough blow late in the 1st quarter as FB/LB Bubba Stokes suffered an injury that forced him from the game. Catholic quickly added to Fulton’s woes as QB Eric Lindsey connected with Pfleger on an 86-yard TD pass to open the 2nd quarter. Pfleger’s next two scores were 7-yard runs, set up by interceptions by Catholic. The Irish led 21-0 at the half.
For the second consecutive week, Fulton struggled in the run game, rushing for a total of 15 yards. QB Jonathan Blair was forced to go to the air to move the ball. Blair connected on 18 of 32 passes, but suffered 7 sacks. Derek Humphrey caught 7 passes for 68 yards, and Vic Smith had 5 catches for 56 yards.
Catholic closed out the scoring in the 3rd quarter on a 70-yard pass from Lindsey to Ryan Walden. Lindsey only completed 3 passes on the night, but threw for 155 yards. Terrence Cobb led the Fulton defense with 7 tackles. A fumble recovery by Derek Wilcox put Fulton in position for a late score, but the Falcons were unable to break the shutout.

Kingston Holds off Fulton, 21-14

With a chance to compete for the top spot in the region on the line, Kingston High School used power defense and offense to help move closer to a spot at the top.

Led by senior James Sams' two touchdowns and a late defensive stand, the Yellow Jackets defeated visiting Fulton 21-14 on Friday night.

The victory moves Kingston (6-1, 3-1 Region 2-3A) closer to Catholic, the conference frontrunner, which leads the pack at 4-0. After a bye week, Catholic plays Fulton (3-4, 2-2) next week.


While Kingston led the entire game, things got dicey for the Yellow Jackets in the second half as Fulton scored two late touchdowns.

Kingston coach Vic King credited his defense.

"Everybody played hard and our defense did exceptional," King said. "I don't know what the stats were but they were all over the place."


Halfway through the third quarter, the Falcons blocked a punt and the ball was ruled down on the Kingston 3.

Fulton quarterback Ben Winters' six yard touchdown pass to Jamichael Williams with 5:31 left in the quarter cut the Kingston lead to 14-7.

Later in the quarter, Kingston retaliated. Sams powered through the defense and toppled a lone defender with a stiff-arm to score.

"We gave as much heart as we could," Sams said. "All my four years we never beat Fulton and tonight we proved ourselves."


In the fourth quarter, Winters led the Falcons down the field and ended a long drive with a 16 yard touchdown pass to Williams with 6:02 left.

Up by seven with a minute and a half left in regulation, Kingston was facing a fourth down and two situation from its 36, but Fulton was called for an offsides penalty giving the Yellow Jackets a fresh set of downs and a victory.


The game belonged to Kingston in the first half as their three-headed running team of Brad Riddick, Alex Roberts and Sams rushed for a combined 133 yards.

Fulton had only 44 total yards on offense with an interception and a sack allowed at halftime.

The Fulton Falcons and Kingston Yellow Jackets meet for the 15th time at Dr. Nat Sugarman Field. The Fulton leads the all-time series 8-6, but the Jackets have won 5 of the 8 games played in Kingston. Fulton has won the last seven games in the series, and the last three games played in Roane Co.. The Falcons lost the first 5 games in the series before QB Chuck Wilson and RB DeMarcus Fine led the Falcons to an emotional 52-29 victory in 1999. The teams have met in the post-season on three occasions, dating back to the schools’ first meeting in 1988. The Yellow Jackets rallied to defeat the upset-minded Falcons 13-12 in that meeting. Kingston has won all three playoff meetings. The Yellow Jackets have made 22 playoff appearances, winning the state championship in 1973. Fulton took advantage of 5 Kingston turnovers and a career night from QB Jonathan Blair to defeat the visiting Yellow Jackets 34-2 at Bob Black Field. Blair connected on 11 of 18 passes and threw for a career-high 236 yards and 3 TDs. Vic Smith and Derrick Humphrey both had big nights catching passes from Blair. Smith had 4 catches for 123 yards and 2 touchdowns, including an 81-yard bomb from Blair in the 2nd quarter. Humphrey began Fulton’s 18-point scoring barrage in the 4th quarter with a 39-yard TD catch. He finished with 3 catches for 94 yards. Fulton’s running game struggled against Kingston, netting only 6 total yards. Terrence Cobb rushed 15 times for 42 yards to lead the effort. For the night, Fulton gained 8 first downs and 242 total yards, both season lows.
The Fulton defense displayed a bend but don’t break philosophy on the night. The Falcons allowed Kingston to gain 183 yards rushing, but forced 5 turnovers to stop potential Kingston scoring drives. Yellow Jacket RB James Sams carried the ball 18 times for 133 yards. Bubba Stokes recorded a season high 18 tackles for Fulton. The Falcons would have recorded their 3rd shutout of the year, except for a safety called against Fulton following a blocking in the back penalty called near the end zone during a Ken Tyson interception return. Tyson recorded two interceptions on the night.

Anderson nips Kingston in two overtimes, 24-17

In a football game that left virtually every fan entertained - even if a few left unhappy - Anderson County High School defeated Kingston Friday night, 24-17, in two overtimes. The game ended dramatically after Justin Ellis of Anderson County recovered a Kingston fumble on third down in the second overtime.
In the first overtime, senior tailback James Sams scored on a 10-yard reception from Francis on the first play to put Kingston up 17-10. Anderson County faced fourth down on its possession, but Paul Longmire threw to Chad Coleman to tie the score.
JN Young caught a touchdown pass on first down for Anderson County in the second overtime.

Kingston runs past Rockwood 21-0

Kingston set the tone early, driving 71 yards on 10 plays and burning more than five minutes off the clock. Three backs touched the ball, including Riddick, who picked up 44 yards and a 4-yard score. Andrew Spellman's kick made it 7-0 in the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets (3-0, 2-0 Region 2-3A) rolled up 235 yards on the ground led by senior James Sams, who had a game-high 116 yards on 19 carries.

Sophomore RB Dametrius Thomas had a career night last week against Scott. Thomas rushed for 194 yards and two touchdowns against the Highlanders. For his efforts, Thomas was named as the Offensive player of the week by prepxtra.com and WBIR-TV. Thomas is the third Falcon to earn a player of the week nomination and first to win this weekly honor. Shaquan Andrews was a defensive player of the week nominee from WBIR last week, and Quintest Vinson was nominated for defensive player of the week by PrepXtra following the Tyner game.
